On October 10th, Michael Page – who donated the land on which St Richard’s was built – laid the foundation stone of the church. A service was led by the Venerable A.J. Morcom, Archdeacon of Middlesex, assisted by Rev’d David Rogers (Rector of St George’s Church) and Rev’d Peter Moore (Vicar-designate of St Richard’s), together with Rev’d F. Bale (the Rural Dean) and Rev’d J. Cotton (Curate of All Saints, Hanworth).
The weather, which was decidedly wet, failed to dampen the congregation’s spirits, and even provided some amusement at the end of the open-air service. During the last hymn, the congregation sang: ‘In copious showers on all who pray, each holy day thy blessings pour’ – and they were promptly drenched by a sudden downpour!
